George Heriot’s School Partners with Blackbaud to Improve Constituent Communications

George Heriot’s School was established following the death of the former goldsmith, George Heriot, who bequeathed his estate to a fund for the education of fatherless boys in his native Edinburgh. The now fee-paying school has since opened its doors to girls and currently has in excess of 1,500 pupils.

Challenge

  • George Heriot’s School recognised the need to maintain contact with former pupils and friends of the School in order to generate funds to enhance the School and provide bursaries for needy pupils.
  • Development staff knew there was a potentially large number of people within the School community who may wish to contribute funds but were unable to effectively manage contact with them.
  • This resulted in limited and untargeted communications as well as potentially missing out on many opportunities to generate funds for the school.

Solution

  • The School implemented The Raiser’s Edge, segmenting former pupils into their various classes, houses and their different interests in order to organise tailored events and reunions.
  • Following this, the School launched their Annual Fund campaign, reaching out to the community to support various projects.
  • George Heriot’s School also used Blackbaud Consulting Services to ensure they were using the system to its full potential.

Results

  • The target for the first Annual Fund Campaign was achieved several months ahead of schedule.
  • Many hours of work have been saved through the automation of processes which previously took weeks to carry out manually.
  • Constituents can now be easily segmented, ensuring that they receive a more personalised service.
