Uses TeamRaiser® to Achieve a More Integrated Approach to Event Fundraising

Cancer Research UK pioneers life-saving research to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. The charity doesn’t receive any Government funding for its research, and as such relies on every pound donated to ensure its goals can be achieved. Relay for Live is just one event organised by volunteer committees on behalf of Cancer Research UK. It is a celebration of life and hope and months of fundraising culminates in a fantastic family and team event, which unites communities to help beat cancer.

Challenge

  • Cancer Research UK wanted to provide a better experience for members of the public taking part in Relay for Life.
  • The charity also recognised the requirement to take a more integrated approach to event fundraising in order to increase awareness and income for the event.

Solution

  • Blackbaud’s TeamRaiser® was chosen by Cancer Research UK to deliver a fully branded online platform for Relay for Life which handles everything they need in one place; fundraising registration, online donations, real-time fundraising reporting, event management, email capability and social-media integration.
  • Because TeamRaiser is an entirely cloud-based service, it also prevents the need for Cancer Research UK to invest in any additional IT or server support.
  • TeamRaiser provides tools for everyone involved in the event – team captains can share what they’re doing and involve others in the event, participants can send emails and share pictures and messages via social networks, and organisers can see a real-time picture of how events are progressing day-by-day.
  • TeamRaiser is able to deal with the complex accounting and logistical challenges of an event spanning a twelve month period.

Results

  • TeamRaiser has given Relay for Life a cost efficient way to make the most of online channels and build more valuable long term relationships with supporters.
  • Cancer Research UK has reported a 35% increase in funds that have been raised online compared to online sponsorship in 2011. There will also be additional income due to having more donations that qualify for Gift Aid, by more income being processed online.
  • They also have shown overall that participants who send more peer-to-peer fundraising emails bring in more income, therefore Cancer Research UK is keen to promote Participant Centre and get participants engaged in the email tool.
