According to the Institute of Fundraising (2006), currently only a third of UK voluntary donations are being Gift Aided (£600 million paid back to charities in 2004/2005). They believe that many charities and voluntary organisations are still not fully aware of what qualifies for the tax relief, or are unsure about how to claim on the more innovative or less well-known eligible areas such as memberships and sponsored events.
With the right tools in place, potentially another two-thirds of donations could be maximised through Gift Aid. Therefore, the IoF believes a realistic Gift Aid target for small to medium charities is two-thirds of voluntary donations converted — and the larger/better resourced organisations should be aiming even higher.
